Isleworth Golf & Country Club is a private 18-hole championship golf course at 6100 Deacon Drive, Windermere, FL 34786, originally designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay and opened in 1986. The course was redesigned by architect Steve Smyers in 2003-2004, plays to a par of 72 at roughly 7,544 yards, and has been ranked the longest and toughest course in the state by the Florida State Golf Association. The club sits inside a roughly 600-acre guard-gated community on the Butler Chain of Lakes that has been home to Tiger Woods, Shaquille O'Neal, Ken Griffey Jr., and other professional athletes. Isleworth has been owned by Tavistock Group since 1993 and hosted the Tavistock Cup from 2004-2013 and the Hero World Challenge in December 2014.

Either way, Isleworth Golf & Country Club is the address that quietly anchors Windermere's entire luxury identity — and it's worth understanding what's actually behind the gate.
Here's the thing: you can't play Isleworth, and you probably can't even drive past the clubhouse. But if you're shopping the 34786 ZIP code, the club is the gravitational center of the market, and most of what gets called "Windermere luxury" is calibrated against it.
The Quick History: From Citrus Grove to Palmer's Vision
The land was originally a Chase family citrus operation — the brothers called it the "Isle of Worth" because the trees there shrugged off Central Florida's worst freezes. In 1984, Chase descendants sold the property to Arnold Palmer, who had flown over and recognized that the rolling terrain and lake frontage would make an unusually good site for a championship course in flat Florida. Palmer and his longtime design partner Ed Seay opened the course in 1986. In 1993, Palmer sold the 600-acre community to the Tavistock Group, the investment firm founded by Joe Lewis, which has owned the club ever since.
The Course Itself
Forget the celebrity stuff for a second. As a piece of golf architecture, Isleworth is genuinely substantial. Steve Smyers led a major redesign in 2003-2004 that lengthened the course and rebuilt the green complexes. The result plays to a par of 72 from roughly 7,544 yards, with a course rating of 76.8 and a slope of 138.
What makes that hard? More elevation change than you'd expect on a Florida course; raw length (the FSGA has ranked Isleworth the longest and toughest course in the state); tight tree corridors — the long par-3 second is famously claustrophobic, with overhanging limbs framing a long, narrow green; and generous, undulating, fast Bermuda greens.
The clubhouse runs roughly 89,000 square feet in a Mediterranean style, with the dining, fitness, spa, and tennis amenities you'd expect at a club where the initiation conversation starts in six figures. The Member Roster Everyone Asks About
Let's just address it: Isleworth's name recognition outside Florida is largely about who has lived there. Tiger Woods kept a home next to the driving range during his peak mid-2000s years. Shaquille O'Neal, Ken Griffey Jr., and Penny Hardaway have all owned property in the community. Payne Stewart lived there before his death in 1999. The PGA Tour player concentration was high enough that Isleworth could field a competitive team against any other club in the world for a decade.
That brought us the Tavistock Cup. From 2004 through 2013, Tavistock-owned Isleworth and Lake Nona hosted an annual interclub match between their tour pro members. It eventually expanded to six clubs, including Albany in the Bahamas (also Tavistock-owned, partly by Tiger Woods and Ernie Els). In December 2014, Isleworth hosted the Hero World Challenge — Tiger's invitational tournament — once before the event moved to Albany the following year.

Comp anchoring. When a non-Isleworth Butler Chain estate sells in the eight figures, the appraisal logic almost always references recent Isleworth transactions. The club's roster of trophy sales sets the upper bound for the whole region.
The "near-Isleworth" premium. Communities like Casabella, Chaine Du Lac, Lake Butler Sound, and parts of Keene's Pointe command premiums partly because of their proximity. You're not inside the gate, but you're in the same neighborhood the gate sits in.
Identity transfer. "Windermere 34786" as luxury shorthand exists in large part because Isleworth made it exist. Buyers who've never seen the chain of lakes have heard of the club.

Inside the gate, you're looking at roughly 900 residents on about 600 acres, almost entirely surrounded by water. Lots range from large to enormous, with architectural styles from Mediterranean and Tuscan to contemporary and no real cap on what people build.
Membership is separate from real estate ownership, and Isleworth is a private club in the strict sense, with initiation costs, monthly dues, and a vetting process that doesn't get advertised. Members get full clubhouse access, dining, fitness, spa, tennis, and practice facilities. Many also keep boats on private docks, since the community fronts the Butler Chain of Lakes — a working interconnected lake system, not just a pretty water feature.

The Cons
- Total cost of entry — purchase price plus club initiation plus dues plus ongoing taxes — is substantial and not for casual buyers
- Architecture rules and HOA are tight; you don't have unlimited freedom on builds and remodels
- The course closes and reopens for member events; it's not a play-anytime situation
- Property tax exposure is meaningful at these price points
What the Locals Know
Three things long-time residents will tell you that don't show up in the marketing. First, the "Isleworth bubble" is real but narrower than outsiders think. Drive five minutes outside the gate and you're in regular Orange County — Publix runs, soccer practice at R.D. Keene Park, Friday morning at the Windermere Farmers Market. Isleworth residents shop at the same places everyone else does, including The Grove at Isleworth at the south entrance.
Second, the celebrity-resident era is more historical than current. Many of the famous names from the 2000s have moved on; the community is still wealthy and well-connected, but the "celebrity sightings" energy has cooled.
Third, if you want the lifestyle without the price tag, look at the surrounding Butler Chain communities.
