State Road 50 / West Colonial Drive Through Winter Garden: The Primary East-West Retail Corridor

The six-lane spine that connects Winter Garden to everywhere else — and the retail strip your daily errands actually live on

Colonial Drive Hwy 50

State Road 50, signed as West Colonial Drive through Winter Garden, is the primary east-west arterial through the city — a six-lane divided highway carrying approximately 44,000 vehicles per day. SR 50 runs roughly 14 miles east to Downtown Orlando and continues coast-to-coast across Florida, from Titusville on the Atlantic to Weeki Wachee near the Gulf. Within Winter Garden, SR 50 hosts Winter Garden Regional Shopping Center (ALDI, Harbor Freight, Dollar General) at 14001-14211 W. Colonial Drive, Winter Garden Plaza, and the major-employer interchange complex where SR 50 meets SR 429 (Western Beltway) and Florida's Turnpike at the Winter Garden / Ocoee city line. The SR 50 / Turnpike interchange dates to 1964 — one of the original Central Florida exits.

Plant Street gets all the press — the brick pavers, the Garden Theatre, the farmers market voted best in the country. But if you actually live in 34787, you spend a lot more time on a different road: State Road 50, the six-lane corridor everyone calls West Colonial Drive. It's where your grocery run happens, where you stop for gas, and where you point the car for almost any east-west trip in West Orange County. Not pretty, but the working backbone of the city.

What SR 50 Actually Is

SR 50 is a roughly 200-mile cross-state highway from Titusville on the Atlantic to Weeki Wachee near the Gulf, passing through Orlando and Winter Garden in the middle. It's the historic east-west route — old enough that the toll-road era (SR 408, SR 429, the Turnpike) was largely built to bypass it.

Through Winter Garden, SR 50 is a six-lane divided highway. Commercial real estate listings on the corridor peg traffic at about 44,000 vehicles per day past Winter Garden Regional Shopping Center — heavy by any reasonable standard, which is exactly why the retail keeps coming.

What's Actually on SR 50 in Winter Garden

Let's be honest about the geography. The famous regional shopping anchors near Winter Garden — Winter Garden Village at Fowler Groves and West Oaks Mall — are technically off SR 50, not on it. Winter Garden Village sits a half-mile south on Daniels Road, and West Oaks Mall is in adjacent Ocoee at 9401 W. Colonial. SR 50 is how you get to both, but the corridor itself is more about everyday retail than destination shopping.

Here's what you'll find directly on Winter Garden's SR 50 frontage:

  • Winter Garden Regional Shopping Center (14001-14211 W. Colonial Drive) — a 128,973-square-foot grocery-anchored center with ALDI, Harbor Freight Tools, Dollar General, and an Orange County Tax Collector office
  • Winter Garden Plaza near 9th Street — an older neighborhood plaza serving downtown-adjacent residents
  • Service-business clusters — auto repair, oil-change shops, tire stores, urgent care, banks, and fast food spread along the corridor between Tildenville and the SR 429 interchange
  • New retail in the pipeline — multiple retail centers were proposed on W. Colonial Drive in 2025, including projects at 15080 and 14451 W. Colonial

For the big-box and lifestyle-center experience, you exit SR 50 onto Daniels Road south to reach Winter Garden Village — Target, Best Buy, Macy's, and 80+ tenants. For the enclosed-mall experience (such as it is in 2026), you continue east on SR 50 into Ocoee. Discover even more shopping options with our comprehensive Winter Garden shopping guide.

The Interchange Triangle: Where SR 50 Plugs Into the Toll Network

The single most important piece of road infrastructure in Winter Garden sits at the eastern edge of the city, where SR 50 meets SR 429 and Florida's Turnpike within about a mile of each other.

SR 50 hits a diamond interchange with SR 429 (Daniel Webster Western Beltway) at the Winter Garden / Ocoee line — your turn south toward Horizon West, the Disney area, and Osceola County, or north toward Apopka. Just east of that, a trumpet interchange connects SR 50 to Florida's Turnpike. According to AARoads, this exchange dates back to 1964 — one of the original Orlando-area Turnpike interchanges and one of the oldest pieces of expressway infrastructure in West Orange.

That triangle is the practical reason Winter Garden works as a commuter base. You can be on I-4 in about 15 minutes, in Downtown Orlando in about 20 (via SR 408 accessed from Ocoee), or at Disney property in 15-20.

Drive Times from Winter Garden's SR 50 Corridor

Real numbers from the SR 50 / SR 429 interchange area, normal traffic:

  • Downtown Orlando — 14 miles, 25-35 minutes on SR 50; 20 minutes if you switch to SR 408 in Ocoee
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO) — 25-30 minutes via SR 429 → SR 417 or via Turnpike south
  • Walt Disney World — 15-20 minutes via SR 429 south to Western Way
  • Universal Orlando — 20-25 minutes via SR 50 east to Kirkman Road, or SR 408 east
  • Clermont — 12 miles, 20 minutes west on SR 50
  • Apopka — 15-20 minutes via SR 429 north

Living Near the SR 50 Corridor: The Real Deal

If you're house-hunting in 34787, plenty of neighborhoods sit within a half-mile to a mile of SR 50 — close enough to make the daily-errand math easy, far enough that you're not staring at six lanes of traffic from the driveway.

The Pros:

  • Every retail, grocery, and service you regularly need is 5-10 minutes from home
  • Three highway connections (SR 50, SR 429, Turnpike) within a mile of each other
  • Generally more affordable than the Plant Street / downtown core or Stoneybrook West
  • Quick access to Horizon West, Windermere, and Gotha via the SR 429 / Daniels Road network

The Cons:

  • SR 50 traffic is genuinely heavy — rush-hour backups at the SR 429 interchange are routine
  • Strip-commercial aesthetics — this is a working corridor, not a charming one
  • Older plazas and aging signage on segments between Tildenville and Dillard Street
  • Some neighborhoods near the highway noise envelope; check before buying

What the Locals Know

Winter Garden has two retail personalities. Plant Street is the one that ends up in the magazine spread — brick pavers, boutiques, the brewery, the theater. SR 50 is the one that ends up in your weekly grocery rotation. Both matter, and the five-minute distance between them is a big part of what makes 34787 work as a place to live.

The corridor is also evolving. Newer outparcel construction, the proposed retail center at 15080 W. Colonial, ongoing redevelopment of older auto-service properties — SR 50 in Winter Garden is steadily upgrading from "1990s strip mall" toward something closer to "modern suburban corridor." It won't ever be Plant Street. But for the things you actually do most days, it's the road that matters most.
