West Colonial Drive (SR 50): Ocoee's Main Commercial Corridor
How to navigate Ocoee's busiest road — and why nearly every errand you run will put you on it
West Colonial Drive is the local name for State Road 50 (SR 50) through Ocoee, Florida. It is the city's primary commercial corridor, running east-west for roughly 4 miles through the city and anchoring West Oaks Mall, Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital, Plantation Grove Shopping Center, and the 1,070-acre Fifty West Community Redevelopment Area. SR 50 was widened to six lanes through Ocoee in a five-phase project completed Spring 2018. The corridor connects to SR 408 at Clarke Road, SR 429 at the Winter Garden line, and Florida's Turnpike via a trumpet interchange just east of SR 429.
If you live in Ocoee, West Colonial Drive is the road you cannot avoid. Groceries, urgent care, the mall, date-night dinner, the pharmacy — it all lives on SR 50. Nearly every community in West Orange County uses it as a connector. Ocoee is SR 50. That's not a slogan; it's how the street grid works. What SR 50 Actually Is
State Road 50 is a cross-Florida highway running from the Gulf Coast at Weeki Wachee to Titusville on the Atlantic. Through Orange County it becomes Colonial Drive — West Colonial through Ocoee, Winter Garden, and Clermont; East Colonial once you cross into Orlando toward UCF and Bithlo.
Through Ocoee, SR 50 is a six-lane divided arterial. That configuration is relatively new: a five-phase FDOT widening project ran from 2015 through Spring 2018 at roughly $37.5 million, shifting lanes, rebuilding medians, and reconfiguring business access. Before that, much of the Ocoee stretch was a congested four-lane road that couldn't keep up with the retail volume.
The Three-Expressway Handoff
Here's where Ocoee gets genuinely unusual. Within about 3 miles of each other along West Colonial Drive, SR 50 ties into three separate toll roads:
- SR 408 (Arnold Palmer Expressway): A connector ties SR 50 to SR 408 at Clarke Road — Ocoee's fastest route to downtown Orlando, typically 15-20 minutes.
- SR 429 (Western Beltway): A diamond interchange joins SR 50 and SR 429 at the Winter Garden–Ocoee line. Southbound gets you to Horizon West, Walt Disney World, and I-4; northbound to Apopka.
- Florida's Turnpike: A trumpet interchange just east of SR 429 ties SR 50 to the Turnpike — south for MCO, Kissimmee, and Miami; north for Ocala and the I-75 corridor.

The Retail and Medical Spine
Health Central Hospital (at Blackwood Avenue)
Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital sits on West Colonial Drive at Blackwood Avenue and is one of the most important buildings in West Orange County. West Oaks Mall opened in 1996 and spans roughly 1.1 million square feet across 125 store spaces. It's anchored today by Dillard's Clearance Center, JCPenney, a 14-screen AMC theater, and a SunPass customer service center. Plantation Grove and Chain Retail

Fifty West: The Redevelopment Story
The City of Ocoee's Fifty West Community Redevelopment Area covers approximately 1,070 acres across a 2-mile stretch of SR 50. It's the city's long-term play to reshape the corridor from car-only strip retail into something more mixed-use and pedestrian-oriented — denser residential, public open space, walkable infrastructure, and a diversified economic base beyond pure retail. West Oaks Mall's ongoing repositioning sits inside this district, as do portions of Bluford Avenue. This is a multi-decade effort. How the Corridor Connects to Adjacent Cities
West Colonial Drive doesn't stop at Ocoee's city limits. East, SR 50 runs through Pine Hills and into Orlando proper. West, it crosses the SR 429 interchange into Winter Garden, where it connects to Winter Garden Village at Fowler Groves and continues toward Oakland and Clermont. The Pros:
- Everything you need is within a 5-minute drive — groceries, medical, dining, shopping, entertainment
- Three expressway options (SR 408, SR 429, Turnpike) within 3 miles
- Access to Health Central Hospital — the most significant non-Orlando healthcare asset in West Orange County
- Generally lower housing costs closer to the corridor
- Long-term upside from the Fifty West redevelopment plan
The Cons:
- Traffic. SR 50 is busy from morning rush through late evening, and weekends near the mall can be worse than weekdays
- Strip-retail aesthetics — this is not a pretty corridor
- Median access changes from the 2018 widening mean some businesses require U-turns locals learn to avoid at peak
- Older plazas vary block-by-block in repair and quality
Navigating SR 50 Like a Local
A few tricks Ocoee drivers learn quickly:
- Clarke Road is your north-south escape when SR 50 backs up near the mall.
- Old Winter Garden Road, just south of SR 50, handles local east-west traffic without the retail chaos.
- Use the expressways for anything over 10 minutes away — SR 408, SR 429, or the Turnpike is almost always faster than surface streets.
What the Locals Know
West Colonial Drive isn't glamorous, and it's not trying to be. It's the working corridor that makes daily life in Ocoee function — hospital, mall, grocery store, and on-ramps to three different expressways, all compressed into a few miles. Understanding how it flows and which alternate roads to use when it's backed up is a basic Ocoee survival skill.
The Fifty West redevelopment district is the piece most new residents overlook. SR 50 today is not SR 50 as it will exist in 10 or 15 years. If you're buying near the corridor, you're buying into a street the city is actively trying to reshape — and that is, on balance, probably good news for long-term property values.
