AdventHealth Orlando: The Flagship, Not the First Stop
Here's where a lot of MetroWest-area articles get this wrong, so we're going to be direct: AdventHealth Orlando is not the closest ER to MetroWest. The flagship campus sits at 601 East Rollins Street — that's downtown-adjacent, near Lake Highland and Loch Haven Park, about 12 to 15 miles east of MetroWest. Drive time runs 20 to 30 minutes depending on whether you take the 408 East or surface streets through Downtown Orlando, and what time of day it is.
So why does it still matter to you? Because AdventHealth Orlando is the AdventHealth system's main tertiary referral hospital — the place where smaller AdventHealth ERs send patients who need advanced care. It's a Level II trauma center, home to a nationally ranked neuroscience institute, a transplant program, the Orlando flagship cancer institute, and pediatric specialty services through AdventHealth for Children. Practically: if you're in a serious accident and paramedics determine you need trauma-level care, you may end up at AdventHealth Orlando regardless of where you live. If you have a complex condition that exceeds your receiving hospital's scope, you can be transferred there. It's the safety net at the top of the regional system, not the place you drive yourself to with chest pain.
If You Prefer AdventHealth: Look at Winter Garden, Not Downtown
If you're loyal to the AdventHealth system — and plenty of MetroWest residents are, because that's where their primary care doctor or specialists practice — the better closer option is AdventHealth Winter Garden. It's a full hospital (not just a freestanding ER) at 2000 Fowler Grove Boulevard with a 24-hour emergency room, roughly 7 to 9 miles north of MetroWest via Apopka-Vineland Road or the 408. Drive time is typically 15 to 20 minutes.
Winter Garden's ER does the same thing as Dr. P. Phillips' ER for most everyday emergencies: board-certified emergency physicians, on-site imaging, lab, surgical capability, and direct transfer protocols up to AdventHealth Orlando for cases that exceed its scope. For Disney-area employees and visitors, AdventHealth also operates the freestanding AdventHealth ER at Flamingo Crossings in Winter Garden at 13323 Hartzog Road — full ER services, also a hospital department of AdventHealth Orlando, but no inpatient beds.
Then there's Health Central Hospital in Ocoee — part of the Orlando Health system, off Route 50, about 8 to 10 miles north of MetroWest. Another full hospital with 24-hour ER and a reasonable backup if you're on the north side of town.
For Non-Emergency Care: Don't Skip Urgent Care
A lot of ER visits in Orlando don't actually need to be ER visits, and the cost difference is significant.
